Relieving and specialist teaching can have challenges for both the teacher in the role, and for students on the autism spectrum.
In this Professional Development workshop for relief teachers, we will focus on developing an understanding of why less familiar staff can be disruptive for a student on the spectrum and provide strategies that can be quickly adapted and applied when resources and time are limited.
The topics covered will give both relief and specialist teachers the knowledge and practical skills to effectively support students on the spectrum.
Split over two sessions, the topics include:
Session 1
- Understanding autism – key points
- Developing rapport
- Key strategies and how to adapt them quickly
Session 2
- Key resources to have in your tool kit
- Preventing meltdowns
- In the moment’ strategies
