Purple in Action: Celebrating Curiosity and Inclusion This Autism Month

Each April, Autism Month provides an opportunity to recognise the many different ways people think, see and experience the world.

This year, Autism SA is inviting individuals, workplaces and communities across South Australia to take part in Purple in Action — a campaign encouraging people to get curious, celebrate difference and create welcome.

For more than 60 years, Autism SA has worked alongside autistic people and families to promote inclusion, accessibility and belonging. Purple in Action continues this work by encouraging simple actions that help spark conversations about understanding and perspective.

Two Ways to Get Involved

Purple in Action includes two ways for the community to take part during Autism Month.

1. Host a Purple Lunch

Workplaces, schools and community groups are encouraged to host a Purple Lunch — a short 30-minute session designed to explore how people think and experience the world differently.Purple Lunches provide an opportunity for teams and groups to pause, reflect and have meaningful conversations about inclusion.Autism SA provides a Purple Lunch Host Pack which includes:

• a planning and communications guide
• a ready-to-use presentation
• discussion prompts and activities
• posters and promotional materials
• a donation QR code to support Autism SA

It’s a simple way for organisations and community groups to celebrate Autism Month while supporting inclusion.

2. Take the 30 Days of Curiosity Challenge

Individuals can also participate in the 30 Days of Curiosity Challenge throughout April. Each day participants are encouraged to:

• notice something interesting, beautiful or unexpected
• share it online using #PurpleInAction
• donate $1 per day to support Autism SA

Curiosity invites us to pause and see the world from new perspectives. When we recognise that people experience the world differently, we take an important step toward creating more inclusive communities.

Why Community Support Matters

Support during Autism Month helps Autism SA continue its work alongside the Autistic and autism community.

This includes:

• developing free resources such as the Autism Friendly Charter and The Spectrum
• delivering community initiatives like the Sensory Bus
• advocating for inclusive communities and accessible policies
• supporting research and sector leadership across education, health and community participation
