Diagnostic Assessment Training for medical and allied healthcare professionals

Autism SA provides opportunities for suitably qualified medical and healthcare professionals (psychologists, speech pathologists, paediatricians and psychiatrists) to be trained in the diagnostic assessment process.

Full training programs are typically held four times a year.

Short programs can also be arranged depending on an individual professional’s needs and prior experience.

Please note that due to a high volume of requests for this training, expressions of interest are currently closed. If there is availability in the future, an expression of interest form will appear on this page.

Full Training Program

The full training program provides an opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced professionals to work in close collaboration with Autism SA’s Diagnostic Team and add to their existing knowledge about autism. It also helps to ensure state and national standards relating to autism diagnosis remain high.

The program is held for a maximum of 3 people at a time, and is organised so that participants undertaking the training at the same time have similar levels of knowledge and experience of autism.

The full training program begins with a full-day group workshop. Before progressing on to practical hands-on training, participants can work individually with a member of the Autism SA Diagnostic Team.

The practical component of the program includes:

  • Observing and participating in assessments with individuals of different ages who display a range of signs and characteristics of autism. This will include observing pre-assessment briefings and discussions, observing assessment and feedback sessions, observing post-assessment briefing and discussions, and opportunities for questioning and clarification.
  • Engaging in case study discussions based on histories, observations and videoed assessments.
  • Opportunities to demonstrate key competencies through writing histories, carrying out assessments, discussing outcomes with parents/carers and writing reports.

The fee for the Full Training Program is $1,500.

Due to a high volume of requests for this training, expressions of interest are currently closed. If there is availability in the future, an expression of interest form will appear here on this page.

Autism SA Diagnosticians Directory

It is anticipated that professionals who complete Diagnostic Assessment Training will contribute to a minimum number of multi-disciplinary diagnostic assessments each year in the private and/or public domain. This number is determined with each professional individually.

Professionals who successfully complete the training have the option to be included on the Autism SA Diagnosticians Directory, a register of professionals that is provided to parents and agencies seeking autism assessments in South Australia.
