Management Expertise
I feel privileged to serve as President of the Board of Autism SA. The organisation has always focused on a high level of commitment and professionalism and believes that all people no matter where they are on the Autism Spectrum can learn, grow and develop to reach their full potential.
Over the last 50 years, we have experienced a huge increase in individuals diagnosed with an ASD in South Australia. The first annual report of Autism SA in 1964 stated that “Overseas statistics indicate that three to four children in every 10 000 are autistic – in South Australia this means that eight autistic babies this year, with, conservatively, 100 children aged between 3 and 17. We don’t know where these children are. We know of 35.”
Today, Autism SA has more than 4,500 individuals registered for services. Diagnostic statistics are however confronting and client numbers continue to increase rapidly. In the 2009 calendar year there was a 7% increase in referrals to Autism SA for a diagnostic assessment. Services were offered to 720 individuals which is an increase of 13% on the figures for 2008. This places enormous pressure on the organisation as the demand for services continue to grow. Not only are we dealing with children being diagnosed at an early age, but with adults who have lived with an ASD without diagnosis until recently, and are now seeking help in dealing with a condition they and their families have never understood.
Challenges are also created for policy makers and funders in determining the allocation of resources for the current and future needs of individuals and their families living with an ASD.
As outlined in our 2009-2013 Strategic Plan, Autism SA’s strategic direction is to be recognised for responding to clients needs and for leading collaboration with stakeholders to promote a service improvement framework that addresses the unique needs of people living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
As the leading provider of specialised services to people with an ASD in South Australia, the Board of Management look forward to contributing to the organisations’ success in developing more ‘autism-friendly’ communities and providing improved outcomes and access for people on the Autism Spectrum.
The dedication of our staff and the support of families and carers’ are important in ensuring that each person on the Autism Spectrum is given the opportunity fully develop their potential.
